The MRE Shop Guide for
Storing your MREs
An MREs shelf life primarily depends on the temperature that you store it at. The best way to store an MRE is at 60° for its longest shelf life. At 60° it will typically last around 5 years or longer. If you store your MRE at 70° which is average room temperature, it will last around 3 years. Stored in the best conditions, an MRE can last anywhere from 7 to 10 years! We recommend that you store them in your basement, a cool and dry area away from sunlight. Its also great to keep them in locations suited for your home emergency plans. Keep them in your bug-out bag or in the basement / storm shelter for a weather / natural disaster related emergency or even keep a few in the car during winter. They are always great to have in rural and off grid locations as a back-up source of food like hunting cabins or off grid shelters.
Many people ask about storing them in the freezer or even the refrigerator, though it does not hurt to store them there, you do not have to. We ask that if you do freeze them you handle the packaging carefully because there is a chance of puncturing the food item package inside the bag. Freezing the MRE will not ruin the food inside. MRE packaging is not meant for repeated freezing. When you repeatedly freeze an MRE you are stressing and stretching the packaging and increase the failure rate of the packaging staying together to preserve you food.
A regular rotation of MREs is recommended every 5 to 7 years to help maintain taste and freshness to your MREs. We acquire and sell our MREs all with the newest production dates available!
